Asian cultures have long had the tradition of drinking tea. Teas can be made from every part of the plant including leaves (like orange pekoe), flowers (like chamomile), bark, roots, seeds and stems. When these desiccated parts of plants are steeped in hot water, the medicinal benefits of the plants are infused into the water and the tea drinker can benefit enormously. Here are some herbal teas and their health benefits.

Green tea: This is one of the healthiest varieties of tea as the anti-oxidants can help to cleanse the body and improve digestion and metabolism. Green tea is also said to combat Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

Chamomile tea: The antioxidants in chamomile also help to cleanse the body and prevents damage to kidneys. Chamomile also stunts the growth of cancer cells and reduces the complications from type 2 diabetes.

Echinacea: This flower tea is said to help improve immune system functioning and is most often used to fight the symptoms associated with the common cold.

Ginger tea: Boil slices of ginger to make a tea that can be sweetened with honey. Ginger tea helps to reduce inflammation (this is great for arthritis and other joint ailments). Ginger is an anti-bacterial and anti-viral so drink ginger tea to combat sore throats, stomach troubles and nausea. Ginger reduces pain and also has cancer-fighting properties.

Rooibos tea: This is derived from a herb that grows in South Africa. Rooibos tea contains flavonoids that help to fight cancer and act as anti-oxidants.

Peppermint tea: Relives the symptoms of bloating and abdominal pain. Peppermint tea also helps to relive nausea, stomach cramps and vomiting.
