How to Use Fat Calipers

fat calipers

You can find your idea weight using the Body Mass Index or BMI. The BMI index shows the ideal body fat percentages for people of all ages. You can measure your body fat with the help of fat calipers. Here’s a step-by-step guide to measuring your body fat using fat calipers. We show you how!

Invest in good quality body calipers: Cheap versions of the real thing won’t have the requisite tension to provide accurate results.

Practice: accurate results take time and practice, so don’t take your first couple of readings too seriously. Keep at it and, in time, you will be getting readings that are accurate and consistent.

Time of day: Just like weighing yourself, your readings will change depending on what time of day it is. Ensure accuracy by always taking your readings at the same time every day. Don’t take readings right after a workout or when you are dehydrated.

Fold the skin over and take the measurement. Take three different measurements and then add them together and divide by three to get an average measurement. The locations for measurements are as follows:

  • Triceps: center of the back of the upper arm
  • Biceps: center of the front of the upper arm
  • Shoulder blade: take a measurement just below the shoulder blade
  • Waist/Abdomen: between the belly button and slightly above the hip bone

A very general indication of your ideal body fat comes from the BMI index:

Men Body Fat Percentages:

  • Ages 20-39: 8% to 19%
  • Ages 40-59: 11% to 21%
  • Ages 60-79: 13% to 24%

Women Body Fat Percentages:

  • Ages 20-39: 21% to 32%
  • Ages 40-59: 23% to 33%
  • Ages 60-79: 24% to 35%

Are you Overweight? Use the BMI to find your ideal weight

What is your ideal weight? Don’t look to the unrealistic and healthy examples set by the fashion and beauty industry for inspiration on your ideal weight. Instead you need to find the perfect percentage of body fat to ensure a healthy figure.

Nutrition has a profound effect on your health. If you are getting too few nutrients and not eating enough, you can suffer from kidney problems, bone density issues, poor immunity and premature aging. Eating too many calories can result in obesity which has an equally negative effect on health and results in diabetes, heart disease, cholesterol and blood pressure issues.

You need to find the weight that suits your height and provides you with a healthy, attainable target that you can strive towards. The best way to find the body fat percentage that will result in your idea weight is to utilize the body mass index or BMI.

The BMI index works as follows:

  • Underweight: Below 18.5
  • Normal: 18.5-25
  • Overweight: 25-30
  • Obese: Above 30

Use calipers to measure you by clamping folds of skin on various places on your body. You can also use bioelectrical impedance which is a more accurate measure of your body fat. Here an electrical current is run through the body and the speed with which is moves indicates the amount of fat in the body. These are a feature on high end bathroom scales.

Once you know your BMI, you can more accurately determine your idea weight using the BMI index below:

Men Body Fat Percentages:

  • Ages 20-39: 8% to 19%
  • Ages 40-59: 11% to 21%
  • Ages 60-79: 13% to 24%

Women Body Fat Percentages:

  • Ages 20-39: 21% to 32%
  • Ages 40-59: 23% to 33%
  • Ages 60-79: 24% to 35%

Lose That Holiday Weight in Four Easy Steps

Bikini Body

Over the festive season, everyone is inclined to overindulge. If you have been tucking into the eggnog and gingerbread cookies, you may need to start the New Year with a healthy eating plan that will see you back to your ideal weight in no time at all. The secret to losing weight and keeping it off is to practice healthy eating and exercise regimens rather than fad diets.

Don’t say the ‘D’ word

Diets are awful. The very word fosters dread and when you constrain yourself to a diet, you are more likely to cheat. Diets also get us into the mindset that resources are limited and this encourages binge eating. Instead of using the dreaded ‘D’ word, focus on healthy eating instead. Eat seven helpings of fruit and vegetables every day and drink 8 glasses of water. Filling up on healthy foods will make it less likely that you will require snacks.

Positive affirmation

When you go on a diet, you are focused on all the negative things about your body. You need to focus instead on the things you love about your body. When you catch yourself thinking something negative about yourself, stop and change that thought to something positive.

Have fun

Be nice to yourself, take long baths, play your favorite music, treat yourself to a manicure. When you start to value yourself and feel like you deserve the best, you will start to feed yourself better too.

You like to move it!

Part of having fun and being kind to yourself is exercise. You don’t have to sweat it out in the gym and hate every moment of it – instead you can go for a swim, take a walk with a friend, have a ½ hour dance party at home or do yoga.

Get moving!

Even a little moderate exercise every day is really great for your health and will help you to effectively lower your blood pressure. Start with walking every day and move on to more taxing cardio vascular exercises when you get stronger.

How to Make New Year’s Resolutions and Stick to Them

December 23rd, 2013 | Posted by nikki in Blog - (Comments Off on How to Make New Year’s Resolutions and Stick to Them)
Belly fat

Recently, the tradition of making New Year’s resolutions has come under fire. Perhaps it’s because so many people fail to keep their New Year’s resolutions, but I would like to resurrect this valuable tradition. Any time you make a commitment to live a healthier, happier life is a good thing. This year, make New Year’s resolutions that are realistic and stick to them so that 2014 really is a better year for you and your family.

Set realistic goals

One of the most common reasons people don’t succeed in their goals is that they set ones that are unrealistic. If you haven’t done any exercise in the last ten years, it’s unlikely you are going to appear in the April edition of Best Bikini Bodies. That’s ok. You can set realistic goals that will see you looking better, feeling more energetic and living a healthier life by April.

Set fixed goals

Don’t set goals that don’t have fixed and tangible outcomes. Wishing that you ‘loose a little weight’ isn’t enough. Instead, decide on what your goal weight will be. Then set easily attainable short-term goals for each week and month until you reach your final goal. Smaller victories along the way will help to inspire you to stick to your diet.

Treat yourself

Set rewards for each goal that you attain. If you reach your weekly weight, treat yourself to something special. Have a really big reward set for the day you reach your ultimate weight or health goal.

You will fail

Everyone falls for that slice of chocolate cake once in a while. Don’t let this be the reason you kick your New Year’s resolutions to the curb. Instead, forgive yourself and just keep moving forward to your goals.

Heart Rate Monitors

December 19th, 2013 | Posted by nikki in Blog - (Comments Off on Heart Rate Monitors)
Heart rate

Heart rate monitors are an essential tool for the serious athlete. Whether you are competing at a professional level or are thinking of training for a marathon, a heart rate monitor can really help you to achieve your goals.

Professional athletes have very low resting heart rates. This is because, as athletes train, their heart capacity increases. This means that the heart has to beat fewer times in a minute to achieve the same blood circulation. Miguel Indurain, a cyclist and five time Tour de France winner, has a resting heart rate of 28 beats per minute which is one of the lowest ever recorded in a healthy person.

A heart rate monitor is not just for indicating your resting heart rate, but also for monitoring the intensity of your workout. To do so, you must first establish the lactate threshold. This is the hardest you can run without experiencing serious discomfort. This means that your breathing is controlled up until the lactate threshold and after this point, it becomes labored.

Once you have established your lactate threshold, you can practice running at a pace that will help you to improve your endurance. Running too fast too often can result in injury or burnout. Running below your lactate threshold can help you to run further and improve your endurance.

Heart rate monitors also help you to establish your current level of exertion. If you are faced with a hill, you can push yourself harder if your heart rate monitor indicates that you have not yet reached your lactate threshold.

For most athletes, a heart rate monitor is an indispensable tool in their training program. Speak with your trainer so that you can establish your five heart rate zones and work on a training schedule that moves you through all five with every run.

Natural ways to help Decongest a Baby with a Cold

December 17th, 2013 | Posted by nikki in Blog - (Comments Off on Natural ways to help Decongest a Baby with a Cold)
Aspirator

When your baby is sick, you just can’t relax. Parents know that their babies have trouble breathing when they have a cold. They also have trouble sleeping and this keeps everyone up and prevents them from healing faster. Helping to decongest your baby helps to rid the body of germs and mucus while ensuring peaceful sleep for the whole family.

Elevated sleep

You can help your baby to sleep by slightly elevating their upper body. Just fold a towel in half, and half again and slip it under the top part of their mattress. This will elevate the upper chest and head so that they can breathe easier and it also helps to prevent congestion.

Nasal Aspirator

Nosefrida is a doctor recommended nasal aspirator that you can use to get mucus out of your child’s nose. It was invented in Sweden by a trained Ear, Nose and Throat Specialists, and has been used by Swedish Moms and Dads for years.

  • Made in Sweden
  • BPA & Phthalate Free
  • Nosefrida is effective and hygienic and has been clinically tested

It is safe to use and causes no injury to you or your child. No more runny noses!

Humidifier

Be absolutely sure that children in the room cannot reach the humidifier and pull hot water down on themselves. Safety is the most important factor when considering a humidifier. If you cannot guarantee that your kids won’t reach it, opt for a cool mist humidifier. If you don’t have a humidifier, place baby in the bathroom in a baby chair and turn on the shower so that the room fills with steam. The steam will help to ease congestion. Don’t leave the child unattended in the bathroom.

You can get nasal aspirators and many other wonderful baby products from Healthcheck Systems.

Healthy Christmas Recipes

December 11th, 2013 | Posted by nikki in Blog - (Comments Off on Healthy Christmas Recipes)
Christmas

The festive season is rife with cookies, eggnog, chocolates and huge meals. It’s easy to see how most people gain weight and so dread the holiday ‘gobble til you wobble’ that it’s difficult to be festive. Instead of trying to avoid all your favorite meals this festive season, why not make some of your traditional classics, but with a healthy twist. That way you don’t have to spend the holiday season saying no to your favorite foods.

Stuffing: You can still enjoy your stuffing, but instead of heaps of butter and fatty sausage, make a few changes that will help you to reduce the calorie intake. Instead of butter, use olive oil (you will need much less) and substitute your pork sausages for turkey sausages instead.

Side dishes: Instead of beans slathered in butter or carrots dripping in sugared butter, opt for stuffed acorn squash. This is a really yummy and pretty way to do a squash. Just cut the squash in half and stuff with onions, mushrooms, green peppers and other items. You can even sprinkle a little low-fat cheese on the top and then bake in the oven.

Mashed potatoes: Use less butter and fat-free cream to get the same yummy texture with less fat. You can also opt for roast potatoes instead of mashed ones.

Gravy: use a gravy separator to remove all the fat from your gravy. If you don’t have one, just leave your drippings to sit on the counter for about half an hour. Then use a spoon to scoop off all the excess oil. You can also use broth to make your gravy instead of drippings.

If you want some healthy recipes to make your Christmas dinner a happy one, see more options here.
